A Bright Room Called Day
written by Tony Kushner
directed by Rachel Gita Karp
October 2025
An intimate, site-specific production of Tony Kushner’s 1980s classic, performed in an apartment in Brooklyn. A Bright Room Called Day follows a group of artists living, loving, and ultimately trying to leave Berlin in the 1930s, as Hitler is appointed chancellor and the country descends into fascism. Written during the height of AIDS and to rail against Reagan, Kushner’s text is as relevant and prescient as ever.
Produced by Portal Rose and Rebecca Friday. Performed by Molly Rose Heller, Portal Rose, Aja Downing, Aubyn Heglie, Jonathan Bock, Ivory Aquino, Toni Jenkins, Michael Cavadias, Gil Cole, and Sarah White.
